Am I Better Than I Used To Be?

All too often I feel like we are hard on ourselves! "I should have done this better;" "If I only would have done this;" "If I only knew then, what I know now!"

I have come to realize that this is just part of life and learning. A question that I often ask myself helps keep me in check: "Am I better than I used to be?" More often than not the answer for all of us is "yes." We are all trying. It doesn't mean that we are doing everything perfectly, it just means that we are progressing. Sometimes the answer may be "no," and that's okay! We just need to make the necessary adjustments, whatever they may be, to get back on track.

When I was in High School, I remember one General Conference, where President Hinckley commented on the wonderful performance of the Tabernacle Choir and the spirit they brought to conference. What really stuck out to me was when he mentioned that their best that day wasn't good enough for “tomorrow.” Since that day, I have tried to use this to help remind me to try harder each day to do my best. Some days our best might be small and simple, other days our best may entail much more. The important thing, is that we are constantly working to try and be the best we can.

As we go through experiences that strengthen us, stretch us, and help us grow, we will look back on our lives and feel joy and happiness as we realize that we truly are “...better than [we] used to be!”
